Case Studies and Question and Answer

‘The Marriage of Atterbury St: When the Art School met the Museum’

In this presentation, David Dibosa, Acting Director of the UAL’s Applied Research Unit, The Engine Room, will briefly outline his role in a collaborative research project with Tate. Tate Encounters: Britishness and Visual Cultures is an AHRC Large Grants project funded for three years under the Diasporas, Migrations and Identity programme. The work focuses on the role of a national art museum in the formation of British national identity. Tate Encounters is run in collaboration between Tate Britain, London South Bank University and University of the Arts London

‘Projection in Performance’

Scenic projection is becoming more and more popular in theatre productions. Recent outstanding examples include: A Disappearing Number by Complicité at the Barbican, Woman in White at the Palace, His Dark Materials at the National Theatre. Despite the rise in popularity in the medium it is rarely taught formally in technical theatre courses. Recently, Ben Sumner, Director of Technical Theatre at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama ran a symposium on Projection in Performance for academics and practioners which has already led to many exciting artist / academic collaborations.

Talking script: Exploring the creative process of script improvisation in Hip-Hop theatre

Talking script is a knowledge transfer and exchange project jointly developed by Dr Jannis Androutsopoulos (professor at King’s College, London) and Joey Gamper, Education Manager of Hip Hop theatre company Jonzi D Productions. The aim of the project was to explore the process by which spoken word improvisation (‘freestyle’) is turned into theatre script in the current creative work of the company. This procedure was central to the creative development of the company’s new piece, ‘Markus the Sadist’, which toured nationally this October.
