Joyce Crick taught German at University College London for many years. Since her retirement she has translated a variety of texts, including Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams, which was awarded the Schlegel-Tieck prize for 2000, Grimms’ Fairy Tales, and Kafka’s stories.

In her lecture she will consider practical problems arising from translating these classic texts, in particular: Freud’s as hybrid texts, both technical and rhetorical; the Grimms’ as written versions of oral tales; Kafka’s as highly indeterminate literary texts.
