Lunchtime Philosophy of Education talk: Can we nurture democratic citizens from childhood? Should we?

Event Details

Date:
6th December, 2012
Time:
12.30pm - 2pm
Venue:
Room 828, Beford Way, Institute of Education

Prof Jim Block, DePaul University, Chicago

Jim Block, building on the research in his 2012 book ‘The Crucible of Consent: American Child Rearing and the Forging of Liberal Society’ (Harvard University Press), will consider the lessons to be drawn from child rearing in the American republic. Through innovative strategies and structures designed to generate the first modern consenting youth, the U.S. offers a vivid case study. Its novel success historically and the crisis of American child rearing today provide us a unique opportunity to rethink and perhaps reshape the project of child rearing for democracy.
