The event is hosted by Brasserie Zedel, in their extraordinary Art Deco Crazy Coqs room, doors will open at 5pm, and the talk will begin promptly at 5.30pm.
Stephen Poliakoff CBE, is one of the most influential writers for the screen and stage. He was appointed writer-in-residence at the National Theatre for 1976, the same year as he won the Evening Standard’s Most Promising Playwright Award for Hitting Town and City Sugar. He has won a BAFTA Award for Best Single Play for Caught on a Train (1980), the Evening Standard’s Best British Film Award for Close My Eyes (1992), the Critics’ Circle Best Play Award for Blinded by the Sun (1996), and the Prix Italia and the Royal Television Society Best Drama Award for Shooting the Past (1999), and for Perfect Strangers (2002), for which he was also awarded the Dennis Potter Award at the 2002 BAFTAs. The Lost Prince (2003) was the winner of three Emmy Awards in 2005 including Outstanding Mini Series, and Gideon’s Daughter (2006) won two Golden Globes and a Peabody Award in 2007. His most recent film for the cinema was Glorious 39 (2009) and his most recent stage play was My City (2011) at the Almeida.
Geoffrey Colman is Head of Acting at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. As a director and acting coach he has collaborated with a diverse range of national & international practitioners including; musicologist David Osmond-Smith (Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, & Purcell’s King Arthur – Gardner Arts Centre, Brighton), the playwrights Ronald Hayman (Being Coward), John Arden (When is A Door), Antoinette Moses (Cuts), and John Roman Baker (Crying Celibate Tears – Finborough, London / Edinburgh Festival), he has directed hologram installations for Musion International (Bloomsbury Theatre, London), new writing initiatives in collaboration with Old Vic New Voices & OffWestEnd.Com, and had a longstanding association with the Theatre Royal Haymarket, as a ‘resident’ master. His acting masterclasses have also featured at; Old Vic (Old Vic New Voices), Young Vic, Pleasance, Soho, Globe, & Olympia (Perform).
Geoffrey broadcasts and writes on a range of performance-related issues (BBC One Show, Eamon Holmes, BBC Radio, ITV, The Stage etc., and his numerous ‘in conversation’ events at the National Theatre (Platform), Barbican (BITE/LIFT), Haymarket (Masterclass), Hampstead, ICA (Culture Now) etc. with actors, directors & writers including; Steven Berkoff (Independent Newspaper, Autumn 2012 Top 10 Cultural event), Claire Bloom, Vanessa Redgrave, PD James, Ralph Fiennes, Trevor Nunn, Robert Lepage, Alan Yentob, Esther Freud, etc. have become very popular. Lectures & keynotes in the last year have included; Marylyn Monroe & Method Acting (National Portrait Gallery), ‘Acting Sarah Kane’ (University of Lincoln), ‘The Actor as Commodity’ (British Library) and ‘Acting for the Small Screen (University of York).
In addition to Natacha Atlas (Transglobal Underground), & comedian / actor Lenny Henry, Miramax, Universal, Britain’s Next Top Model (Living TV), Skillicious (ITV), Pineapple Studios (Sky 1), Geoffrey’s recent film & TV coaching includes; Derren Brown – ‘Miracles For Sale‘, ‘Apocalypse‘, ‘Fear & Faith’ (Channel 4), ‘Mother of Invention‘ (Sky 1 / release 2013), & the blockbuster movie; Kick Ass 2 (Marv Films / Universal Pictures International – dir. Jeff Wadlow / release 2013). Geoffrey’s introduction to Steven Berkoff’s One Act Plays (Methuen Drama) was published recently.
