Trinity Laban’s annual summer opera returns to Blackheath Halls this June, with Offenbach’s famous and highly amusing comic opera Orpheus in the Underworld.

Featuring a talented cast of students, Trinity Laban Opera is supported by a fantastic creative team including Simon Iorio, alumnus of the Trinity Laban vocal department who has worked on productions at Glynebourne, the Royal Opera House, English Touring Opera and Opera Holland Park, talented Bulgarian conductor Rossen Gergov, and designer Bretta Gerecke, recipient of over 20 awards for Outstanding Achievement in Set, Lighting and Costume Design. Costumes are by Emma Williams, Olivier Award winner for her costume designs on Henry IV parts 1 & 2 at the National Theatre.

Set in two Acts, Offenbach’s amusing Orpheus in the Underworld follows the journey of Orpheus to Mount Olympus to demand the return of his unfaithful wife, Eurydice, from Pluto, God of the Underworld. As Orpheus seeks out his wife, Jupiter also descends to Hades to compete for the heart of the now bored prisoner.

With a colourful cast of gods and goddesses, this entertaining story of duplicity and ambivalence reaches its climax in the riotous revels of the celebrated ‘Can-Can’. A lively and highly enjoyable show for both performers and audience, with many world famous tunes, this production promises fun and flamboyance for all ages.
