The Guildhall School of Music & Drama is one of the world’s leading conservatoires. Former Technical Theatre students have gone on to work for the National Theatre, the Royal Opera House, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and many other leading theatres and production companies. The School maintains its high standards through the expertise of its tutors. Nick Peel, who leads the course, has worked in the West End and for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He has designed lighting for shows both at Guildhall and many other spaces. He has been lecturing in lighting technology and design for over 10 years, and also works with the Royal Opera House education department visiting schools to consult and solve lighting problems.

The Guildhall’s Stage Lighting Skills Summer School offers a unique opportunity for primary and secondary school teachers, amateurs and school leavers to develop their stage lighting skills in a supportive, fun and friendly environment.

The course will offer: 

  • An introduction to the work of an electrics department and the terminology that we use including accessories, lamps, lenses, lanterns and luminaires
  • Hands-on experience rigging and focusing lanterns of all kinds, and the accessories needed to rig and plug them up
  • Guidance on how to read and draw a lighting plan
  • A section on safe working and the basic electrical theory that underlies it, plus a practical plug wiring exercise
  • Techniques for basic fault finding
  • Advice on using DMX to control dimmers, moving lights, scrollers etc 
  • Advice on how to prepare for a show 
  • Advice on how to control lights using manual and memory desks 

Additionally, there will be a tour of the backstage areas to demonstrate how to resource a producing venue.
