Schoenberg has been seen as the ‘bad guy’ of 20th-century music for over a hundred years, but is this still an appropriate response for 21st-century musicians? This study day will investigate Schoenberg’s music, his own ideas about composition, and will discuss how performers today might best approach Schoenberg’s works. There will be masterclasses on piano and vocal repertoire with Peter Hill (University of Sheffield) and Jane Manning.

Masterclasses

Peter Hill Piano Masterclass on Drei Klavierstücke, op. 11 and Sechs kleine Klavierstücke, op.19
Jane Manning
Vocal Masterclass on Brettl-Lieder and Das Buch der hängenden Gärten, op.15

Speakers

Guy Dammann (Guardian critic and Guildhall School tutor)
Claire Taylor-Jay (Guildhall School)
Alessandro Timossi (Guildhall School)
