This symposium interrogates the relationship between art and events of social and political significance, and in particular, the way art incorporates non-art elements via social practices.
When did the mandate for art to be ‘socially responsive’ emerge? How and why do artists negotiate roles as activist, organiser, witness, archivist and counsellor? Why does architecture and urban space figure so centrally in the engagement of art with social practices?
