Hearing is Believing: William Barnes’s Poems of Rural Life in the Dorset Dialect

The dialect poems of William Barnes (1801-1886) have been marginalized because of the rural dialect in which they are written; but when heard in their original pronunciation, they come alive in a remarkable way. Tom Burton (Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Adelaide) explores their potential for dramatic and musical performance, with pianist Ceri Owen, a scholar of Ralph Vaughan Williams, who himself set a number of Barnes’s poems to music.
