Talk on The Babylonian Marriage Market (2) by Edwin Long (RHUL)

Event Details

Date:
3rd December, 2014
Time:
13:00-13:45

To many contemporary viewers this painting seems a strange choice for a women’s college. This talk explores why Thomas Holloway was so keen to buy the picture that broke the record for the highest sum ever paid at auction for a contemporary artist and sets the painting within the context of the 19th century struggle to improve the status of women and their education.
