In gaining altitude above modern British political economy, this lecture transcends the boundaries of mainstream political and economic discourse. In exploring the trends and practices of past centuries, it not only presents a framework by which today’s statecraft can be more powerfully understood but it details a range of strategic options now facing Britain in the twenty first century. In a world increasingly witnessing the private supply of public goods and a hollowing out of the state, the lecture raises profound questions about the nature of modern political economy and questions what we will come to mean by ‘governance’. The lecture is designed to be of interest to political scientists, economists, sociologists, lawyers and anyone who also studies business and public policy.
