This Guildhall School Research Works lecture explores the use of modern technologies – CT-scanning, CAD modelling and 3D printing – to understand the tuning and fingering systems of Venetian cornetts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, revealing aspects of the instrument’s design and performing practices that made it particularly adept at imitating the human voice. The presentation includes live demonstrations of 3D-printed and hand-carved replica instruments based on historical originals. Presented by Dr Jamie Savan, Senior Lecturer and Head of Performance at Newcastle University, and a member of His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts.
