What is queer performance? Where is queer performance? How can performances of queerness, from the stage and YouTube to the dance floor and online sex communities, be a mode of socio-cultural critique?

In this one-day conference we will explore how queerness manifests itself as a performative trope that engages race, class and gender identity formations, and is performed online, on stage, on screen, in the streets and in the sheets. Our approach will be grounded in theories of performance and performativity while exploring diverse forms of queer performance from a range of media.

Queer Performance Now! presents panels on Body/Tech, Queer Performance and History, and Queer Venues and Spaces, plus a performance by Rebekah Ubuntu.

The keynote will be delivered by Dr Luis-Manuel Garcia, Lecturer in Ethnomusicology and Popular Music Studies at the University of Birmingham.
