Max May, a student on the BA (Hons) Broadcast Technology course has been awarded an International Moving Image Society Award (IMIS).

Max, who graduated last year, was awarded the Chief Engineers of Facilities Forum (ChEFF) award for his third year work which he exhibited at last year’s degree show. His project was a live virtual reality (VR) production suite involving 360 degree cameras which then fed into a vision mixer to broadcast pre-recorded footage of the degree show being set up. This was then streamed to the internet and could be viewed via Google Daydream/Oculus Rift.

David Spilsbury, Global Director of Technology, Moving Picture Company Advertising visited the 2017 degree show with his colleagues and was impressed by the diverse, well-presented array of projects.

David said: “I was impressed by Max’s research into the psychology of live experience VR and his awareness of the issues faced by production teams creating live VR content.

“This is really the spirit that CHEFF was formed to foster – an engineering community sharing technical experiences and knowledge to come up with practical solutions.”

Max commented: “I didn’t expect to win anything at all. I know many industry experts visit our degree show but I wasn’t expecting to win an award. I’m really thrilled.”

Max was presented his award by Martin Uren, Vice President of IMIS and an associate lecturer on BA (Hons) Broadcast Technology course at Ravensbourne at the annual IMIS Awards. The awards took place at Regent Cinema in Soho where David Attenborough attended as an honorary guest. Max also received £1000 in prize money.
